About

I studied undergraduate physics at the University of Manchester, receiving a BSc (Hons) degree in 1988. I then worked for a short time as a Research Scientist in the Systems Division of Philips Research Laboratories in Redhill, UK, mostly on filter and antenna technologies for mobile communication systems. I returned to the University of Manchester in 1990 to undertake a research degree in Theoretical Physics, graduating with a PhD in 1994.

I joined the Department of Electronic Engineering at the University of York in 1996 as a Research Assistant in the Applied Electromagnetics Group and became a Research Fellow in the Physical Layer Research Group in 2000 and the Communication Technologies Research Group in 2016.
During the period 1996 to 2003 I also provided consultancy services on Electromagnetic Compatibility for York EMC Services. While at the University of York I was engaged in research on many aspects of applied electromagnetics including electromagnetic compatibility, computational electromagnetics and antenna design.

Since July 2017 I have been a Senior Electrical Systems Engineer with SNC-Lavalins’s Atkins business, based in York, UK, where I provide expertise in electromagnetic compatibility, electromagnetic exposure and electrical modelling for transport and infrastructure design projects.

I have published over 150 technical papers and articles on electromagnetic engineering topics and authored over 100 technical reports for government, research funders and industrial clients. I am a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), including the Electromagnetic Compatibility Society (EMCS), Antennas and Propagation Society (APS), Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTTS) and Power and Energy Society (PES). I am a member of the Council on RFID (CRFID) and Transport Electrification Community (TEC). I am also a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), including the Electromagnetics Network and Railway Network.
